What is an EGR?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a method to control Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions. Air from the environment, mostly a combination of Oxygen and Nitrogen, combines with fuel and ignites inside the combustion chamber, temperatures increase and produce NOx emissions. The EGR system works by returning a small portion of exhaust gas to the engine's combustion chambers through the intake manifold, lowering combustion temperatures and therefore reducing the amount of NOx emissions emitted. The EGR valve is the main component of the EGR system and it's normally closed. It connects the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold and is controlled by either a vacuum or a built-in electric step motor. The function of the EGR valve is to control the flow of exhaust gas being recirculated depending on the engine load.

EGR Failure

A faulty EGR valve can cause problems with the flow and operation of the EGR system leading to performance issues including a reduction in power, reduced acceleration and decreased fuel efficiency. It can also cause vehicle emissions to increase.

EGR valves can become stuck ‘open’ or ‘closed’ due to a build-up of soot particles, carbon deposits and dirt from fuel. Motorway driving conditions are the most favourable to your EGR valve as longer, faster journeys allow the engine to get hot enough to get rid of carbon deposits. Whereas urban driving conditions can allow these deposits to build up. Some of the EGR valve symptoms are listed below:

  • Rough Engine Idle
  • Poor Performance/Power
  • Increased Fuel Consumption
  • Engine Management Light on
  • Smell Fuel or Smoke
  • Coloured Smoke from Exhaust

EGR Removal

We are currently seeing alot of companies offering EGR deletes on vehicles equipped with LIVE DPF systems. We DO NOT recommend this for a number reasons. First of all, as part of the integral emissions system that was embedded into the software, the EGR and DPF systems work together in the regeneration process.

If the EGR system is deleted by means of duty cycle and airflow modification, this will have a negative impact on the DPF regeneration cycle. The DPF system was designed to work along side the EGR using different strategies in the passive and active regeneration process. Once the EGR is modified, by default, this will upset the regeneration strategies and more often than not, result in an early DPF filter failure due to incorrect regeneration strategies.

If you require EGR Removal we recommend service as part of a complete DPF/EGR Removal. This does not affect vehicles without a DPF Filter.

Depending on the age of your vehicle, there is a possibility it may not have a DPF fitted, in which case an EGR removal/delete is possible without further issues and can be done in a matter of hours. Call our experts today for further information and pricing.
